We are in a world today that taking the proactive approach in your healthcare is the prudent thing to do. Previous generations were not as educated on healthcare and prevention as we are today. Therefore, your health was treated with a reactive mindset rather then a proactive one.
We know today that prevention and living a healthier life is the key not only to physical health but, your financial health as well. If you do not have your health today, then you can count on spending a large portion of your time and money taking care of it. Spending your money and time going to doctors throughout the week will not be the way many people envision spending their retirement years.
Staying healthy involves changing your mindset from eating all the way down to how you exercise. Changing your diet for instance by decreasing the amount of red meat is one step, along with eating more fruits and vegetables. Eating more protein is a must as your muscles and body need it to repair itself. Cleaner types of proteins like egg whites and chicken breasts is a great source. Taking a long hard look at your dietary practices is a proactive way to take some control over your own health. You cannot eat like a 20 year old when you reach the half century mark.
Exercise is the other part of the puzzle that has to be addressed. Weight training is the exercise of choice. Sure cardiovascular exercise and stretching are important but, keeping your muscles strong can only be done by strength training. The amount of muscle you can keep in your latter years will determine your health as they will help you maintain weight control. Without a strong muscular foundation, bodyweight gets out of control and, balance and problems with falling come into play due to weak legs.
Getting a physical once a year is sound prevention as well. Some physicals are more detailed then others however having your doctor look you over is a smart thing to do.
Being assertive with your health will be important in this new age of working and living longer. You hold the keys to your healthcare future. By being proactive and taking better care of yourself, you keep the prescription drug count down to a minimum which in most cases does more harm then good.
