10 Tips to Avoid Holiday Bulge!
Thu, 10 Dec 2009

Before we get to the tips, I want to remind you to be careful of one of the largest culprits to weight gain: ALCOHOL.

Alcohol contains many calories and 'UN-inhibits' our appetite. This means, when we indulge in alcohol, we'll typically over consume in food too; usually of poor choice. Be careful with the cocktails. Enjoy them in moderation.

In order to help you finish this year with a strong mind and body, here are 10 tips to help you succeed in controlling the 'Holiday Bulge...'

1. Exercise one hour a day, 4-5 times a week. A brisk walk with a loved one, a run, or bike-ride, will burn calories, relieve stress, and elevate your endorphins and mood. Be sure not to snack during this time.

2. Avoid eating no fat. Eating moderate amounts of fat at a meal can help you feel fuller sooner and keep you full longer, just don't over do it.

3. Don't skip meals. Skipping meals leads us to being hungry, creates low levels of energy, and poor food choices.

4. Get rid of the junk food in the house. Why tempt yourself? Don't create more stress and temptation for yourself. Stock the house with healthy choices.

5. Don't go hungry to a party. Set yourself up for success. Before you leave for an event, eat something lite or drink a meal replacement shake. Also, drink lots of water before and at the party.

6. MODERATE consumption of alcohol. Choose light beer or wine spritzers.

7. Lift your spirits. Schedule a relaxing massage, a brisk walk, or take a yoga class to lift your blues away.

8. Control that sweet tooth! Set some limits. Allow yourself some decadence, but limit it to once or twice a week and only one dessert.

9. When eating out, make healthy choices. Choose wild rice stuffing, baked sweet potatoes, whole-grain breads and angel food cake with fruit, are great alternatives.

10. And if you really want to keep yourself honest during the holiday festivities, wear your most form fitting clothes. Why? Because sometimes we just need a gentle reminder when enough is enough...!;)
