Ways to Stop Nail Biting
Tue, 01 Dec 2009

There are many ways to stop nail biting, and it really depends on a few factors. The factors include your age, the way you think, and what you do for a job. These need to be taken into account in order to decide which method is going to work the best. Nail biting causes your long-term finger nail growth to be interfered with and it can cause long-term deformation in your nails. In the short term you are going to end up with bleeding, painful cuticles, and sore fingertips. There is also the damage your teeth to think about. Another risk is that it can infect your mouth, and cause very painful infections around your fingertips.

The two different ways to stop fingernail biting are the psychological method and the barrier method. These psychological methods attempt to overcome the nail biting habit by using a psychological approach. This method attempts to replace the nail biting with another habit that does not damage your skin or nails. The method also approaches the problem by focusing on the root cause, be it stress, anxiety, or some other cause. There are many different reasons behind nail biting. One of the most common reasons for forming that habit is nervousness. This same nervousness can be witnessed in other forms of body focused repetitive behaviors such as hair pulling, facial picking, nose picking, twitching, scratching, or constant fidgeting. This is a more long-term approach to the problem of nail biting and tries to offer up alternative behaviors.

The second method of controlling fingernail biting, and one which is used more often in children and teenagers, is the preventative approach. This approach tries to defeat the habit by placing a barrier between the nails and a nail biter. For instance, there are several different brands of stop fingernail biting polish that are available on the market. The polish is applied to each fingernail and allowed to completely dry. Once the fingernail is placed inside the mouth to start a bout of biting the person receives a foul taste.

It is best to try a combination of these two approaches. Find out when and why the biting is occurring. If the biting happens during stressful situations, look at ways to reduce the stress. Use special nail polish to help. With dedication and serious effort, it is possible to overcome this bad habit. The longer the habit goes on, the less likely it will be to ever have normal looking nails.
