Concerned parents do everything they can to prevent their children from getting sick. The places that kids travel most are notorious for having lots of germs. Schools, the store, child care centers and the outdoors all have their fair share of germs. However, you might be doing your child an injustice by being over protective with their health. Healthy regimens like using hand sanitizer all have their place when used in moderation, but if your child is "too clean", it can lead to a weakened immune system. Much of the advice and tips we practice with vigor may not actually be the best way to care for your child. Let's discuss what happens when a parent attempts to quarantine their child from the germs around them.
A child's immune system is not yet fully developed. Even an adult's immune system is constantly at work to learn and adapt to new germs it encounters. As a child grows, they are exposed to millions of germs and illnesses. This is actually a good thing because the immune system needs to be trained to battle microscopic enemies. As each type of germ is encountered, the immune system catalogues it for future reference. When that same germ is encountered in the future, their body will have no problem fighting it. Exposure to microorganisms in the environment prepares the child for potentially harmful encounters in the future as they grow.
Teach good hygiene, but find a healthy balance. Running, playing and just being a child is a good thing and your child should be left to do so in freedom. Natural encounters with the elements will result in a healthy individual who is prepared for life. Of course, there are dangers out there that need to be addressed at all times. Things like harmful chemicals, certain pets like reptiles, and particularly dirty areas should be avoided. Friendly pets are normally fine to touch, and can be allowed to approach your child. Keep them away from strays and wondering animals like birds, lizards, and insects, as these can carry diseases or poison.
Once you and your child are on track for a healthy lifestyle, it can be easy to maintain. As your child grows older, these practices can be carried on in their life. Exposure to germs isn't as bad as we once thought it was, and can actually be quite beneficial in the long run.
