Antibiotics For Sinus Infections - The Real Story About Antibiotics For Sinus Infections
Mon, 23 Nov 2009

Do I need antibiotics for sinus infection? Probably not and don't be surprised if your doctor is reluctant to prescribing them to you. Studies have shown that antibiotics are not the best remedy for sinus problems. Over 60% of sinusitis sufferers will recover from their sinus problems without antibiotics. Many agencies are now recommending that doctors be cautious about prescribing their patients to antibiotics.

Why are less and less doctors prescribing antibiotics?

Most sinusitis cases are caused by viral or fungal infections, not by bacteria. Antibiotics will only treat an infection if is caused by bacteria. Therefore, an antibiotic will do more harm than good if taken for a non-bacterial infection. You do not need antibiotics for sinus infection. If antibiotics are misused and taken too often, for ailments caused by fungal or viral infections instead of bacterial infections, the bacteria can become resistant to the antibiotic, rendering the medication useless. If an antibiotic is taken for sinusitis, studies have shown that the infection time is only decreased by a day.

Okay, so what medication will cure my infection?

Right now, none. Sadly, there is no medical cure for viral or fungal sinusitis at this point. Most patience are simply asked to "wait it out." But there are many over-the-counter medications that can help ease the symptoms. Oral decongestants can help ease sinus pressure. Pain relievers can help ease sinus headache. Nasal sprays work wonders for nasal congestion, but use them with caution. Do not use them more than recommended on the package (usually 3 days) or they can actually make your condition worse. Some people claim to be addicted to the the nasal sprays. A newly popular device called the neti pot can be used to cleanse the sinuses of excess mucus and give temporary relief from the infection.
