Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anal area (either internal, or external). They can be extremely painful, itchy and sometimes bleed. There are four different hemorrhoid home treatments which you can try to help to ease the symptoms and prevent them from recurring.
Diet
Yes, I know, diet is blamed for everything these days, but in the case of hemorrhoids it really is true - after there is a close link between what you eat and what you poo! Your diet needs to have fiber - from whole grains, green vegetables, fruit or a dietary supplement - the source isn't important - the end result will be improved digestion all round. If you drink plenty of water with every meal, and a few glasses in between meals, this will also help your digestion (and be very good for your liver and kidneys too!).
Exercise
Another favourite of health professionals everywhere - but the fact is that the more you move, the better your bowels move! We're not talking about joining a high tech gym or training for the Olympics. Just a simple brisk 30 minute walk, several times a week will keep your innards sweet, and will have other benefits to your health as well. If you're like me, and get bored walking, then plug yourself into your MP3 player and either listen to music, or take the chance to learn something - there are loads of audios about a huge range of subjects available for download from the internet.
Hygiene
You need to keep the area near the hemorrhoids clean, but you don't want to irritate them by scrubbing at them with dry toilet tissue, or washing them with scented soaps. Dabbing with damp tissue, drying gently and sprinkling with cornstarch (works like talcum powder without the artificial scent which might sting) is all that is needed to keep you clean, dry and comfortable.
Sitz Bath
Sit in a warm shallow bath several times a day and sprinkle the water with St John's Wort and Echinacea to help prevent infection and reduce your pain. If you are in a lot of pain, don't use Aspirin based products as they may increase the bleeding from your hemorrhoids. Instead use a paracetomol product like Panadol. If your pain continues or worsens and your hemorrhoids don't get any better, please go and see your doctor.
