Principles Behind Great Health #3 - Use Quality Fuels
Tue, 17 Nov 2009

Lunch at a desk, out on the road or entertaining clients, can make eating nutritious and balanced meals quite difficult for Sales Professionals. This lifestyle often leads to snacking, eating junk food or skipping meals altogether. If lunch is on expenses, it's easy to overeat, and as time in the evening is precious, there's often the tendency to buy convenience food or eat out.

The effect of what we put into our bellies is huge - you are what you eat - as they say. We need a variety of essential nutrients: Potassium, Sodium, Magnesium, Calcium, Zinc etc, which enable our cells to grow and repair as well as giving us energy. Other requirements include: proteins, carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, amino acids, omega oils, enzymes, anti-oxidants, friendly bacteria, vitamins and minerals.

Now unless you've studied nutrition and bio-chemistry in any depth, it can be confusing. There's also lots of controversy as some so-called and self-claimed 'experts', contradict each other about whether things are good or bad for us (meat, dairy, red wine etc); the media is full of advertorials (advertisements disguised as articles - popular with PR agencies) so it's easy to end up thinking it's all a bit too much hassle. Unfortunately this lack of understanding and confusion is starting to take its toll across most of the developed world: 1 in 3 people in the UK and 1 in 2 in the US, are now likely to develop cancer at some stage. The most common types are: Prostate, Bowel, Cervical and Breast but there are now over 200 or so recognised cancers.

On the whole we know fad diets don't work and that a good balanced diet is the way forward. However, there are people and organisations who tell us that even a balanced diet isn't good enough now because of the lack of minerals in the soil (queue the advertorials for popping supplements). There is always organic of course, but at a 30% premium in price and a best before date half an hour after leaving the shop, it's hard to stay committed.

It doesn't have to be this way. By cutting through all the confusion and contradiction and working within some basic parameters, it's possible to both provide the body with what it needs at a cellular level and, as importantly, enjoy what we eat! The benefits of getting it right include: higher energy levels, a better body shape and less chance of developing something horrible.
