Tue, 10 Nov 2009

It is summer. For some, summer is an exhilarating experience. For others, it is a nightmare. Who wants to be around when the slightest increase in temperature causes dripping and staining? For those who suffer from excessive underarm sweating, summer is the enemy.

Excessive underarm sweating is not a comfortable experience. Not only does it cause you physical discomfort but it also has many other consequences. The discomfort affects your personality because it creates a great deal of self-consciousness. Apart from staining your shirts and causing huge laundry bills, it could also cause a foul odor which can socially embarrass you. Many people who suffer from this syndrome are therefore in constant search of cures.

What are the ways used to deal with excessive underarm sweating? Treatments vary from doctors who prescribe medications and in extreme cases, surgical operations, to physiotherapists who suggest therapeutic prevention of excessive sweating. There are also philanthropic organizations that recommend meditation, prayer and breathing control to pacify irritating sweat glands.

One way to deal with excessive underarm sweating is through medication. Aluminum chloride solutions like MegaDry, B+Drier, Sweat-Stop forte, and Driclor are some of the common antiperspirants used to prevent excessive sweating. But this solution is not very effective for the underarms. A better medication method would be using Botox or Botulinum toxin type-A injections that disable the sweat glands in your body. The effect remains for nearly nine months. However, one must be careful to not use this injection if you have some other infections. Moreover, the injection could be painful at times and requires anesthesia. Apart from these, there are also other drugs like Anticholinergic drugs, Ditropan, Robinul and Propantheline Bromide, which are used to reduce or prevent excessive sweating. However, some of these drugs have after affects on the patient like drowsiness and dry mouth.

In extreme cases, doctors prescribe surgical operations for excessive underarm sweating In ETS (endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy) surgery. a nerve is selected in the chest and is cut or cauterized, which destroys the nerve's ability to transmit impulses. Another treatment involves Iontophoresis, where a weak electrical current is passed through the affected area, while drug-carrying ions are passed through intact skin. This chokes the sweat glands. In another process, which is called percutaneous sympathectomy, the nerve is blocked by an injection of phenol. The popular eastern treatment for the same disease is acupuncture. Also, advocates of medication-free treatment suggest meditation, prayer, breathing control to work wonders to prevent excessive sweating.
