When is Acupressure Unsuitable?
Tue, 10 Nov 2009

Acupressure is a natural therapeutic treatment that is a branch of the Traditional Chinese Medicine, and is the official medicine in modern Japan since the mid-20th century. As such, millions of people for thousands of years have benefited from it.

Acupressure is similar to acupuncture except that here the therapist applies gentle to firm pressure to specific pressure points on the body to stimulate the energy flow in the body, strengthen its self-healing capabilities and enable it to fend off illness better.

Acupressure is safe. It does not involve any intake or mechanical manipulation. It generates no negative side effect. Post-session reactions such as body temperature decrease and need to sleep are the effect of the vital energy working hard to heal your body-mind-spirit. It has been recognized to be safe by the World Health Organization (WHO), the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), among other reputed institutions.

However, acupressure (as well as acupuncture) is unsuitable in a few specific conditions.

If you are pregnant, be aware that 6 acupoints are called "abortive". As a matter of fact, they are used to naturally induce labor. If you do not want to induce labor, do NOT apply self-acupressure without the guidance of an acupressure or acupuncture professional. If pregnant, consult an experienced, certified practitioner.

Acupressure is not recommended as a treatment for the following conditions:

  • contagious or inflammatory diseases, including skin disease
  • advanced osteoporosis
  • serious spinal problems (e.g. hernia, scoliosis)
  • heart disorders (stroke, attack, etc)
  • arteriosclosis

Finally, acupressure is not used to treat open wounds, scar tissue, varicose veins, or areas of inflammation.
