Too Much Stomach Acid - Its Causes and Cures!
Mon, 09 Nov 2009

Too much stomach acid can cause all kinds of problems and discomforts. In this article I am going to talk about what causes too much acid in your stomach and how to cure it so you can start feeling good again.

If you have a healthy digestive system, you have the proper amount of stomach acid (Hydrochloric acid). This is important because you need enough acid to kill unhealthy bacteria and fungi that normally comes with your food.

However, in these days of fast foods and lots of stress, most people have some type of acid imbalance. Having too much stomach acid is much more common than having too little (if you have too little your food will not digest properly and bacterial and fungi can be a problem).

An imbalance of stomach acid can cause:

  • Bloating
  • Belching
  • Flatulence (you know what that is...it's what's caused by "musical fruit"/beans)
  • A burning sensation
  • Indigestion
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Pain...and more pain!
Some Myths About Resolving Too Much Stomach Acid
  • You should drink milk to curb stomach acid. Drinking milk can end up causing more acid.
  • You should avoid citrus fruits and spicy food. Mexican food is notorious for stomach discomfort, but its more the fat in it than the spices.
Better Solutions

First: Try eating smaller meals throughout the day instead of 3 bib meals.

Second: Avoid high-fat meals. If you eat out a lot you will have to work hard to avoid high-fat foods, but it can be done. Choose salads, baked potatoes instead of fried, and grilled instead of fried foods.

Third: Don't overeat. Overeating is very hard on the stomach an can really get the digestive juices flowing.

Fourth: Avoid drinking too much alcohol.

Fifth: Don't lie down for an hour or so after eating. Taking a very casual walk usually helps.

Sixth: Get yourself a wedge pillow so that your upper body will be on a slope. This will help the food and acid to go down instead of up (yuk).

Doing the above should help you, however, there is more to having a good balance of stomach acid and to get that "Gee, I feel good!" feeling back again.
