Mistakes When Making a Nasal Rinse
Mon, 09 Nov 2009

Some people a few serious mistakes when trying to make a homemade nasal rinse solution. The following are a few of the problems that you want to avoid when trying to mix your own at home.

The first involves the type of salt is used. Table salt should be avoided, since it typically contains not only iodine, but other additives, like anti-caking agents. Both these additives and the iodine can irritate the nasal lining. Because of that is important to find salt does not have any of these additives, such as pickling salt.

Some people like to add baking soda solution when they are making a homemade nasal rinse. The idea behind it is to adjust the pH of the solution to more closely match that of the body. This is good in theory, as it should make the nasal lavage more comfortable. However baking powder cannot be substituted for baking soda. In essence, while they perform a similar function when baking, they are different chemicals and will affect the nasal lining differently.

Of course the biggest portion of any nasal lavage solution is water. Water straight from the tap should be avoided. Most tap water contains minerals and bacteria. In addition, most tap water also contains chlorine. None of these things are good for your sinuses. If possible, one should use distilled water, but because of price people often try to use water right from the tap. If one must use tap water, one should boil it first. Be sure to let the water cool, since obviously hot water in the nasal passages can do extreme damage.

Commercially prepared solutions are not so expensive as to be out-of-reach for most people. When it comes to your nasal health, why risk making a mistake which could further irritate or even damage your sinus cavities?

If you are not going to buy a commercially-prepared rinse, be careful to avoid the common mistakes when making a homemade neti pot solution.
