Do you blush practically all the time? Are you beginning to despair of ever being even close to normal? If you blush intensely and frequently you may have a deeper problem. Excessive blushing is a symptom of social anxiety disorder. Although you may feel freakish, a significant portion of the population shares your anxiety. In fact as much as 13% of people have social anxiety disorder.
Simply being aware that other people share your discomfort can help you begin the process of becoming less anxious. That won't be enough to end your blushing, though. As much as you may wish it, there is no instant cure. Recognizing you have a problem is a good first step, and the next step is understanding why you blush on both a psychological and biological level.
Biologically speaking, you blush because you are human. Psychologically speaking, you blush because of some emotional stimuli. You may be embarrassed, ashamed, humiliated or feel singled out. No one knows exactly why humans developed blushing as a response, but some of us are painfully aware that is the case. Once you identify the situations and corresponding emotions that make you blush, you will be better able to continue the process of lowering your anxiety levels.
The next important step is to take care of yourself physically. Exercise regularly and eat a nutritious, balanced diet. There are many, many benefits to maintaining your health and becoming more confident is one of them. Through meditation, relaxation and positive thinking you can finally begin to be comfortable in social situations, whether you blush or not.
