Compression Socks Can Assist in Blood Circulation For Feet
Wed, 28 Oct 2009

Whether you are an athlete or enjoy staying active, have a job that requires you to stand for most of the workday, or suffer from edema, lymphedema, or any similar condition, swelling and sore muscles in the feet are debilitating. However, by using compression socks throughout various activities, you can help the blood circulation in your feet and increase the delivery of oxygen to muscles.

You will need to understand what type of sock to purchase; depending on the severity of your condition will determine the pressure level required. For instance, each compression sock will be attributed a number such as 10 mmHg, which stands for "millimeters of mercury" and is a measurement of pressure. The greater the number, the tighter your socks will be on your feet and ankles.

Also referred to as support socks by some manufacturers, they come in both men's and women's sizes and have been used by individuals for more everyday use due to their positive results in preventing various circulatory problems (i.e., deep vein thrombosis and the aforementioned conditions).

You may consider using compression socks if your feet and/or lower ankles suffer from swelling-related issues or regularly participate in some of the following activities:

- High-impact sports (such as basketball, football, or track and field)

- Long-distance running (including marathons or races)

- Jobs that require long periods of standing (which include flight attendants, sales associates, and health care professionals)

- Any job or activity that necessitates extended periods of sitting and not using your legs (such as receptionists and office workers).

When it comes time to select compression socks that will be right for your body or condition, it is best to consult your physician so they can help determine the optimum type and fit. For example, choosing a compression sock that fits too loosely won't have a substantial benefit, whereas a sock that provides too much pressure can be a hindrance to movement or even damaging to your feet's circulatory system.
