People will often visit their doctor for what they call indigestion. The term is used to describe any number of signs and symptoms in the abdominal area. Nausea, abdominal discomfort, bloating, heartburn, and more are symptoms of what is described as indigestion. And some people experience occasional vomiting.
The most common symptom that people associate with indigestion is stomach pain, or dyspepsia. Common causes of this pain include:
* Stomach inflammation, or gastritis from various medications, an infection, or alcohol
* Peptic Ulcers
* Nonulcer dyspepsia, which is a condition where people experience symptoms that resemble those of an ulcer, but where the ulcer does not actually exist
Indigestion with abdominal pain can often occur alone, or it could accompany other digestive systems. Occasional episodes of indigestion often stem from overeating, or eating too much of the wrong kinds of foods. Fatty foods, gas-producing foods, or dairy products for those who are lactose intolerant, all can all lead to painful indigestion. Fortunately, the pain usually goes away within a few hours. If these are symptoms of a viral or bacterial infection, the pain may linger for two or three days or more.
Less commonly, discomfort or stomach pain can be a symptom of other digestive problems, such as inflammation of the gallbladder, or even pancreatic disease.
An occasional occurrence of dyspepsia generally is not anything to be concerned or worried about, and may actually be tied into hunger pangs. But if there are persistent recurrent, or severe discomfort or pain, you should see your doctor.
