Thu, 22 Oct 2009

Hemorrhoids, which are also know as piles, are inflamed and swollen veins in the anus and rectum. Often they are accompanied by acute pain, itching, and burning around the anus area. While being afflicted by hemorrhoids is something most people do not talk about, about three out of four people in this country will have them during their lifetime. The peak period for hemorrhoid outbreaks is between 45 to 65 years of age. All people with hemorrhoids do not suffer severely from them. Those that do are in search of treatment for hemorrhoids. Since the symptoms for hemorrhoids can be confused with other more serious afflictions is it best to seek advise from a physician before starting treatment of hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids can be classified as either external or internal. In many of the cases treatment for hemorrhoids in either category will be the same. In severe cases surgery is recommended. Finally there are preventative treatments that are probably the most effective.

General treatment for hemorrhoids is designed for the reliving of the symptoms and then allowing the body to heal itself. Things that can be done to relieve the symptoms are:

sitting in a warm tub of water several times a day for at least ten minutes

  • putting ice on the inflamed area to reduce swelling
  • use of creams, gels, containing cortisone; petroleum jelly, or suppositories on the impacted area
  • use of homeopathic medicines on the impacted area
  • cleaning the anus with moistened pads instead of dry toilet paper after bowel movements
  • wear loose fitting clothing and or cotton underwear
  • takeacetaminophen; aspirin increases bleeding tendency

Since it is usually the symptoms that cause the trouble any treatment for hemorrhoids that address them will be effective.

The preventative treatment for hemorrhoids can be developed by examining a few of the causes for them. People who are constantly straining during bowel movements tend to have hemorrhoids. By the same token people that experience intense diarrhea, coughing, sneezing, and vomiting can also bring on the symptoms. Lack of exercise, prolonged sitting or an inactive lifestyle can also be contributing factors. Many pregnant women experience hemorrhoids from pressure exerted by the uterus. Preventative treatment for hemorrhoids then can be initiated by starting a more healthy lifestyle. Standing and walking regularly seems to help. Changing one's diet to include a high fiber intake will help to soften the stools.
