After spending a fair portion of my young adult life in the gym or public pool, I contracted my share of toe nail fungus. Most of the time, I've been able to contain it with over-the-counter medications; or so I thought. Toe nail fungus is one of those ailments that you can easily dismiss and ignore until the problem gets worse. The biggest issue with trying to find the right toe nail fungus medicine is that it could take a long time to see improvement.

I've tried over-the-counter remedies in the past, with mixed results. If the treatment you're trying takes 6 months or more to administer, you'll want to make sure that you've gotten the right one. I later switched to natural toe nail fungus medicines because the cost was much more favorable to my budget even though they took about the same amount of time to work.

Crushed garlic method

I started with crushed garlic and garlic oil rubbed into the toes at bedtime, and then covered with white cotton socks. This stank to high heaven and thankfully I was single at the time because I'm sure no woman would be sleeping with me for long. This treatment lasted several months before I gave up.

Apple cider vinegar soak

This technique actually reduced the itching and scaling of the nail. Every evening while watching the news I soaked my foot for an hour. It took 3 months of soaking but I still had thick, yellow toe nails in the end.

Listerine mouthwash soak

I received this recommendation after giving up on expensive over-the-counter treatment. Before initiating the mouthwash soak, I calculated the cost of applying this remedy over 6 to 12 weeks. It turned out to be more expensive than the over-the-counter remedies I've already tried! No thanks.

The problems I found with these remedies and their application was that the solutions might work at a higher strength dosage or with a lot more time. The problem with homemade medicine is that they lack clinical tests or consistency.
