Heavy perspiration is a problem that has many different treatments and home remedies. These methods range in effectiveness and vary based on what kind of sweating and the severity of the sweating. For people who suffer from extreme levels of sweating, many of the usual remedies fail, therefore they resort to surgery as a means to cure them of their ailment.
There are several surgical procedures used to treat different types of sweating problems in different areas of the body. Most of these surgical techniques are minimally invasive, and often involve cutting or interrupting the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands, effectively reducing the overall level of perspiration.
So what are some of the surgical methods that are used to treat excessive sweating?
One procedure is called Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy, and is done through the chest, neck, or back. Small incisions are made on either side of the chest, and medical equipment is inserted, including an fiber optic camera. In this procedure the sympathetic chain of nerve supply is clamped or coagulated. There is a very high success rate for this technique (98%) but there is also the possibility of the process reversing itself.
Lumbar Sympathectomy is the procedure used for people with excessive foot sweating. The patient is put under general anesthesia for this surgery. The retro-peritoneal area is where the incisions are made. Then the medical equipment is passed into the three small cuts. As with other procedures, the nerve supplies are cut, or in other cases clamped or coagulated.
